After losing her father at age 10, she helped her Mom take care of her younger siblings, Sharon and George. She started working various jobs at a young age to help with the bills. Despite not having much, she loved playing with her cousins Christine, Carolyn, Kathrine and Ted. Growing up in the Church of Christ at 4th and College, she discovered the joy of singing. She was an amazing alto. In high school she was a part of a trio that included future opera singer Roberta Knie. After graduating in 1956, she attended Abilene Christian College in Lubbock, Texas for one year. College was put on hold when she met Richard Christian Brunner. They were introduced through mutual friends while he was serving in the Army in Iceland. They started a long-distance relationship as pen pals before finally meeting in person when Richard was on leave. After discharge, Richard made the trip to Cordell and proposed. During the engagement, in August of 1957, she started working as a legal secretary for Jess Wesner. The law firm grew to include Ron Wesner, Mark Wesner and Charles Rainbolt.
Richard and Barbara were married on June 8th, 1958. Their first son Brian, was born on May 30th, 1962, followed 3 years later by son Todd. They loved attending OU football games with their good friends Leon and Maurine Gregg. They also attended many school and athletic events cheering on their niece and nephew, Corinn and Colby Auld. Most vacations were spent visiting her sister Sharon and husband Ron in Missouri, relaxing and fishing on Table Rock Lake. In the early 80’s they decided to build a cabin on the lake.
Their special friends, Ron and Arlene Vanderveer along with Earl and Norma Parsons, spent many a weekend with them building this cabin which was enjoyed by countless friends and family for over 25 years. In 2007 Barbara retired from the law firm after over 50 years. Clients were known to say, “We don’t need to talk with the attorneys, we’ll just ask Barbara.” She and Richard enjoyed traveling to the cabin and visiting friends and family in Maryland and California. The biggest joys of her life were her grandsons Zac and Logsdon. She loved singing to them and reading books like Katy and the Big Snow. Most of all, she loved the Lord! She was the spiritual rock of the family and wanted everyone to know Jesus.
Barbara is survived by her husband Richard of the home, sons Brian and wife Rene’e of Cordell, Todd and wife Dana of Weatherford, grandsons Zac Brunner of Siloam Springs, Arkansas and Logsdon Brunner of Weatherford, sister Sharon Auld of Weatherford, brother George Auld and wife Sharon of Tuttle, nephew Colby Auld, niece Corinn Bailey and husband Steve and her favorite basketball player, niece Landry Allen.
