James Arthur "Jim" Harris, a beloved father, grandfather, friend, and longtime Clinton resident, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by the love of his family, on September 16, 2026.
Jim was born on November 10, 1948, in Lubbock, Texas, to Reverend Therman Winfred Harris and Leila Mae (Freeman) Harris. He spent much of his childhood in Tulsa, Oklahoma, before moving to Clinton, where he graduated from Clinton High School with the Class of 1967.
Following high school, Jim attended the University of Oklahoma, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1971. His education laid the foundation for a successful career and a life marked by hard work, dedication, and integrity.
On January 2, 1977, Jim married Katherine (Jennings) Aneshansley, and to this union one son, Matt, was born. On September 12, 1986, he married Janice (Mahanay) Rhodes and lovingly welcomed her son, Derek Rhodes, as his own. Family was the center of Jim's life, and he took great pride in the accomplishments and happiness of those he loved.
Jim began his career with Elmer Smith Oil Company in 1979 and faithfully served the company for more than three decades before retiring in 2013. During his years there, he served as Vice President and as a member of the Board of Directors. Even after retirement, his knowledge and leadership continued to be valued, and he remained on the board for an additional two years.
Jim found great joy in playing golf and guitar, watching old westerns, listening to music—especially the blues—and spending time with family and friends. He was an enthusiastic supporter of OU Football, OU Softball, and the Clinton Red Tornadoes, rarely missing an opportunity to cheer on his favorite teams. Whether on the golf course, listening to music, attending a game, or visiting with friends, Jim's presence brought laughter, warmth, and genuine companionship.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Harris; his parents, Reverend Therman Winfred Harris and Leila Mae Harris; his brother, William Wade "Bill" Harris of Cheyenne, Wyoming; and his sister, Jo Ann Shepard of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Jim is survived by his sons, Matt Harris of Clinton, Oklahoma, and Derek Rhodes of Elk City, Oklahoma; his granddaughter, Lilli Martinez and her husband, Kade, of Elk City, Oklahoma; his grandson, Zach Rhodes of Elk City, Oklahoma; his brother-in-law, James Don Mahanay of Clinton, Oklahoma; and a host of extended family members and dear friends who will cherish his memory for years to come.
Memorial contributions may be made to Friends for Life, P.O. Box 1965, Weatherford, Oklahoma 73096.
