Graveside service for Joy Palmer, 98, Clinton resident will be held Saturday June 12, 2021 at 2:00 P.M. in the Prairie Bell Cemetery in Putnam, OK, officiated by Chris Fields and under the direction of the Kiesau-Lee Funeral Home. Joy Avis (Fortner) Palmer was born October 22, 1922 to John William Fortner and Lillie A. (Lewis) Fortner in Putnam, Oklahoma and passed away Monday, June 7, 2021 in the Hobart Hospital in Hobart, OK. Joy was raised on the family farm, five miles west and one and quarter miles South of Putnam, OK. She attended Putnam Schools and then continued her education at Southwestern Oklahoma University in Weatherford. She married Leo Palmer September 20, 1941 in Weatherford, OK. They made their home in Putnam until 1961 and then they moved to Clinton. She was employed with the State of Oklahoma working in the Vocational Rehabilitation Office for 25 years. She was a longtime and faithful member of the First Baptist Church; she was a Past Matron of the Eastern Star, she was a loyal and proud member of the Democrat Party, served as secretary for the Custer County Democrat Party Central Committee, past president of the Integris Clinton Regional Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Clinton Business and Professional Women. She was also a member of ESA, Beta Psi Chapter #498; she sang in the JOY Choir; she enjoyed working on genealogy, reading, volunteering at the hospital, the Route 66 Museum and the Literary Club. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Leo, daughter, Carolyn Joan Walker, sister LaVeta J. Fortner, three brothers, Loyd W. Fortner, Floyd W. Fortner and John Fortner and great grandson Michael Kewley. She is survived by son, Leo H. Palmer, Jr and wife Pam of Stillwater, Oklahoma. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Rebecca Jo Palmer, Ronald Leo Palmer and wife, Sheila, Regina Renee Kewley and husband, Mike, Raquel Rae Friend and husband, Jimmy, and Ernest Dean Walker; great grandchildren, Dustin, Matt, Holly Jean Hurlbert and husband Dylan, Cory Palmer, Chase Kewley, Shelbi King and husband Chandler, Alex and Zach Fehr and six great great grandchildren.
